Blue Raven Solar is frequently ranked among the best solar installation companies in the US. They focus on making photovoltaic (PV) systems more accessible through user-friendly financing options, and their installations are covered by 25-year product warranties.

Blue Raven was founded in 2014 and acquired by SunPower in 2021. Although SunPower also installs solar panels, the companies still operate as separate business units. However, Blue Raven uses SunPower panels in most of their installations.

As of 2023, Blue Raven offers solar panels in 21 states, and they also install home batteries and energy monitoring systems. The offer two financing options with $0 upfront cost:

  • BluePower Plus+ = No loan payments for 18 months.
  • SmartStart = 60-month loan with fixed interest rates and payments.

In both cases, you own the PV system outright and can claim incentives like the 30% federal tax credit. Of course, you can also purchase the solar array with a single cash payment. Blue Raven does not offer solar leases and Power Purchase Agreements (PPA).

Blue Raven Solar has excellent scores in both the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the EnergySage marketplace. As of July 2023, the company had a score of 4.44/5.00 based on 1,376 reviews at the BBB, and a score of 4.5/5.0 based on 465 reviews at EnergySage.

What Solar Panel Brands Does Blue Raven Install?

Blue Raven Solar is owned by SunPower, who makes their own solar panels though a separate company called Maxeon.

  • As you might expect, Blue Raven mostly installs SunPower panels, but this is actually a positive factor.
  • SunPower modules are among the best in the solar industry, with up to 22.8% efficiency and 25-year product warranties.

According to MarketWatch, Blue Raven also installs solar panels from other top brands such as Canadian Solar and Trina.

A solar energy system needs an inverter to convert the direct current (DC) generated PV cells into the alternating current (AC) required by your home appliances. Blue Raven Solar uses Enphase IQ7+ microinverters, which are installed individually on each panel. Enphase offers a 25-year warranty and a built-in monitoring app, which can be used to track the electricity output of your solar array.

How Much Does a Blue Raven Solar Installation Cost?

Solar companies don’t normally publish the cost of their PV systems, unless you contact them for an actual quote. You get a customized system design and quote, based on your site conditions and monthly energy bills.

Like most other companies, Blue Raven Solar does not publish official pricing data. However, EnergySage provides a typical price range for the brands they install. Keep in mind these are average cost across many solar installers, not specific prices for Blue Raven:

For comparison, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) reports a US average price of $3.16 per watt across all solar panel brands and installers. This value falls within the price range of Canadian Solar and Trina, but SunPower has above-average prices.

Regardless of your solar panel brand and system size, you can claim the 30% federal tax credit. This benefit is available for primary and secondary homes that are used directly by the owner, but not rental homes.

  • As a quick example, assume you purchase a 5-kW home solar system that uses SunPower panels.
  • At a unit price of $3.79/watt, your total cost would be $18,950.
  • The solar tax credit is equivalent to $5,685 and the net system is reduced to $13,265.

Blue Raven Solar also has a customer referral program, with increasing payments: $500 for your first referral, $1,000 for your second referral, and $1,500 for your third referral onwards. Keep in mind that you only get the payment for successful referrals, not for those who only request information and quotes.

Blue Raven Solar Loans: BluePower Plus+ and SmartStart

Blue Raven is characterized by their customer-friendly solar loans: BluePower Plus+ and SmartSmart. This is one of their main advantages over many other solar companies.

Solar Loan OptionDescription
BluePower Plus+You pay $0 upfront for your home solar system.
You are not charged loan payments for the first 18 months.
Your interest rate and payments are fixed for the entire loan term.
There is no penalty if you decide to pay off the loan earlier.
SmartStartYou pay $0 upfront.
The solar loan is paid over five years (60 months).
You get a promotional interest rate for 18 months, and Blue Raven absorbs any rate increases during the next 42 months.
There is no penalty for early prepayment.

Under both loan options, you own the solar panels from the first month of use. Being the system owner, you can claim incentives such as the federal tax credit and local rebates. Blue Raven takes care of maintenance and any repairs needed during the loan term.

Blue Raven Solar does not offer leases and PPA contracts. Under these payment options, the company offering you the system retains ownership, and they claim all the incentives.

Blue Raven Solar Battery Options

Blue Raven also installs the SunVault energy storage system from SunPower. The SunVault is a lithium-ion battery, specifically a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The LFP chemistry offers a longer lifespan than many other lithium-ion technologies in the market.

The SunPower SunVault has the following specifications:

  • Continuous Power Output: 6.8 kW / 13.6 kW versions available
  • Energy Storage Capacity: 13 kWh / 19.5 kWh / 26 kWh / 39 kWh versions available
  • Dimensions: 28 x 64.5 x 14 in
  • Product Warranty: 10 years
  • Connectictivity: Ethernet cable, Wi-Fi and cellular

SunPower and Blue Raven don’t provide official pricing data for the SunVault on their websites. EnergySage reports a typical cost of $15,000 for the 6.8-kW / 13-kWh version, without including installation labor.

The SunVault is designed for indoor and outdoor use. The unit is normally synchronized with the grid voltage, but it can also operate as a backup power source during blackouts.

Blue Raven Solar Installation Process

Blue Raven Solar has an online form where you can submit your contact information to get a custom quote. Once they have your information, they follow the steps below:

  1. Initial meeting: Blue Raven contacts you to schedule a visit and determine if your home is suitable for solar panels. This includes checking your roof, electrical installations and monthly energy bills.
  2. Discussing financing options: Blue Raven will discuss their loan options and create your solar panel installation agreement.
  3. Solar PV system design: Blue Raven designs a solar array based on your roof conditions and home energy usage. They take care of all the paperwork required for permitting and solar incentive programs.
  4. Solar installation: Your home solar system is installed according to the approved design. Blue Raven completes most installations in a single day, but larger projects can take two days.
  5. Final inspection: Blue Raven schedules the final inspection by the local authority and/or utility company. After the inspections, you get the permission to operate (PTO) and your solar system can be switched on.

Does Blue Raven Solar Offer a Good Warranty?

Blue Raven Solar offers a 25-year product warranty and a 10-year workmanship warranty.

  • The 25-year warranty covers the solar panels and Enphase microinverters
  • If you add a SunVault battery system, it comes with a 10-year warranty.

You also get a two-year productivity warranty. If your solar panels don’t reach the electricity output projected by Blue Raven, they upgrade your system for free to achieve the productivity that was initially offered.

Blue Raven is directly owned by SunPower, but you get a better warranty if you purchase a solar system directly from SunPower. In this case, the 25-year warranty also covers workmanship. However, SunPower does offer the BluePower Plus+ and SmartStart loans – you can only get them from Blue Raven.
