One letter on your quote decides which panel you actually get
The HiKu6 and the TOPHiKu6 are two different panels separated by a single character in the model number. One uses p-type PERC cells, now under 5% of world module production. The other uses n-type TOPCon. UK retailers mix the two up in their own product listings, so the brochure will not tell you which one is on your roof.
If an installer has quoted you Canadian Solar HiKu6 panels and you are trying to work out whether that is a fair deal or a way of clearing old stock, the answer is in the model number rather than the sales pitch. This review covers what the HiKu6 is, what it produces on a British roof, what it should cost you in 2026, and the one line on your quote that tells you whether to sign it.
- The HiKu6 is a p-type PERC panel, and PERC is now under 5% of global module production. TOPCon took the market between 2023 and 2026. A HiKu6 quote in 2026 is a quote for last-generation cells.
- The residential HiKu6 gives you 395W to 420W at 20.2% to 21.5% efficiency. The n-type TOPHiKu6, in an identical 1,722 x 1,134mm frame, gives you 420W to 440W at up to 22.5%.
- The product warranty is 12 years, not 25. That is the single biggest gap against every mainstream rival on a UK quote, and it is the number to check before efficiency.
- Trade price is roughly 12p to 14p per watt, or about £53 for a 415W panel. On a 12-panel roof, the modules are around 13% of the installed cost. Downgrading them saves you very little.
- Check the part number for a “T”. CS6R-410MS is PERC. CS6R-430MS-T is TOPCon. Several UK sellers list the TOPCon module under a “Mono PERC HiKu6” heading, so the description cannot be trusted.
Our verdict and scores
The HiKu6 is a well-built panel from a serious manufacturer, and it is the wrong thing to be buying in 2026 unless it comes with a real discount. It is durable, it is cheap per watt, and Canadian Solar has been making modules since 2001. It also runs older cell technology, carries a 12-year product warranty when rivals offer 25, and degrades faster over the life of the system. Accept it only if the quote is meaningfully cheaper than the same installer’s TOPCon option. In our experience of UK quotes, it usually is not.
What the HiKu6 actually is
It is a monocrystalline PERC module built on 182mm M10 wafers with half-cut cells and multi-busbar interconnection. The residential version you will see on a UK domestic quote is the CS6R, a 108-cell panel measuring 1,722 x 1,134 x 30mm and weighing 21.3kg. The CS6W and CS6L are the larger commercial and utility formats, running to 590W, and they will not go on a house roof.
PERC stands for passivated emitter and rear cell. It adds a reflective layer behind the silicon so photons that pass straight through get a second chance to be absorbed. It was the mainstream technology for most of the last decade and it works. The issue is that the industry has moved on. Analysts at CRU put mono PERC at under 5% of global module production at the start of 2026, down from more than 80% of shipments in 2022, with TOPCon taking the bulk of what replaced it.

Note the two warranty lines, because they are not the same thing and installers rarely separate them. The 25 years covers output falling faster than the published curve. The 12 years covers the physical panel: delamination, frame failure, a cracked junction box, a dead bypass diode. A panel that fails in year 15 is a panel you pay to replace.
HiKu6 or TOPHiKu6: the part number problem
Canadian Solar sells both a PERC panel called HiKu6 and a TOPCon panel called TOPHiKu6, in the same physical frame, through the same UK distributors. The part numbers differ by one letter. CS6R-410MS is the PERC module. CS6R-430MS-T is the TOPCon module. That “T” is doing all the work.

The last row is the one that matters. Both panels occupy exactly the same roof area, take the same rails and the same clamps, and add the same weight. Every advantage in that table is free in space and labour terms. You are not trading anything away to get it except a small difference on the bill of materials.
UK retailers do get this wrong. At least one distributor lists part number CS6R-430MS-T under the product title “430W High Power Mono PERC HiKU6”. That module is n-type TOPCon, not Mono PERC, and the two carry different warranties. Do not accept a panel description on a quote. Ask for the exact part number and the MCS certificate reference, and check that the datasheet the installer sends back matches both.
What it produces on a British roof
Take a standard 12-panel array on a south-facing pitched roof, which is what most three and four-bedroom semis end up with. Twelve HiKu6 410W panels give you 4.92 kWp. Twelve TOPHiKu6 440W panels in the same roof space give you 5.28 kWp. At a UK average of roughly 900 kWh per kWp, that is 4,428 kWh a year against 4,752 kWh. The gap is 324 kWh, or about 7%.
Put a value on it. Without a battery, a typical household uses around a third of what it generates and exports the rest. That splits the 324 kWh into roughly 113 kWh you do not buy at 26.32p, the Ofgem capped rate from 1 October 2026, and 211 kWh you export at around 12p on a mid-market Smart Export Guarantee tariff. Call it £55 in the first year.
The gap widens. PERC degrades at 0.55% a year after a 2% first-year drop, ending at 84.8% of nameplate in year 25. TOPCon degrades at 0.40% after a 1% first-year drop, leaving 89.4% at the same point. By year 25 the HiKu6 array is producing about 3,755 kWh and the TOPCon array about 4,248 kWh. The 7% gap has become 13%.
One thing the HiKu6 does well is low light, and that matters more here than the temperature coefficient does. Half-cut cells cut resistive losses and hold up better under partial shading, and the -0.34%/°C temperature figure that looks poor on a datasheet is close to irrelevant in a climate where panels rarely run hot for long. What the HiKu6 should cost you in 2026
UK trade distributors have listed the 415W HiKu6 at 12.7p per watt, which is about £53 a panel before the installer’s margin. Clearance stock is going for less: an electrical wholesaler in Hull was selling 405W silver-frame HiKu6 modules on eBay at £78 each in mid-2026, and that is a retail price to the public, not a trade one. Panels are cheap and getting cheaper. They are not where your money goes.
Here is the arithmetic that decides this. The panels are £780 of a £6,150 job, about 13% of the total. Moving from PERC to TOPCon at UK distributor level costs a few pence per watt more, which on 12 panels is somewhere in the region of £100 to £200 on the bill of materials. So you are saving around 2.5% of the installed price to give up 7% of the output in year one and 13% by year 25. That is a bad trade, and it does not get better the longer you own the system.
Ask the installer for a like-for-like alternative quote with the TOPCon module in the same frame, and ask them to show the price difference as a line item rather than a revised total. The warranty, and who is standing behind it
Twelve years is the standard product warranty on the European HiKu6 datasheet, against 25 years on the TOPHiKu6 and on essentially every mainstream n-type panel sold in the UK. Canadian Solar does publish a 25-year product warranty version of the HiKu6, but it is restricted to residential rooftops in certain regions, so the version on your quote depends on which datasheet the distributor is working from. Ask which one applies and get it in writing.
Two things soften the risk. Your MCS installer’s workmanship warranty typically runs 10 to 25 years and covers installation faults, which is where most early problems come from. And panels fail rarely: the common failure points on a domestic array are the inverter and the isolators, not the modules.
One correction worth making, because it changes how you read the warranty. Canadian Solar was founded in Ontario in 2001, and the parent is NASDAQ-listed, but the modules are made and the warranty is issued by CSI Solar Co., Ltd of Suzhou, Jiangsu. A 25-year warranty is a promise from a company that has to exist in 25 years. Canadian Solar reported a net loss of $77m in Q2 2026 on revenue of $1.2bn, with total debt up to $7.1bn and module shipments down 60% year on year as the business pivots towards battery storage. It is not in distress, it holds around $1.4bn in cash, and it has survived worse cycles than this one since 2001. It is still the sort of thing worth knowing before you value a long warranty at face value, on any brand.

Who should accept a HiKu6 quote
You have a large unshaded roof with more space than you need, so the efficiency gap costs you nothing in capacity.
The installer has priced it visibly below their TOPCon option and shown you the difference as a line item.
You are on a tight budget and the choice is realistically between this system and no system.
It is a shed, garage, outbuilding or ground mount where a panel replacement in year 15 would be straightforward.
Your roof is small or awkward and every watt of capacity counts.
The quote costs the same as the TOPCon version, which is what we see most often.
You are planning to add a battery or an EV charger later and want the headroom.
Access is difficult, scaffolding is expensive, or the array sits somewhere a future panel swap would be costly.

The pattern here is not that Canadian Solar has fallen behind its rivals. It is that the HiKu6 has fallen behind Canadian Solar. Frequently asked questions
Are Canadian Solar HiKu6 panels MCS certified in the UK?
Yes. UK distributors list MCS references against individual HiKu6 model numbers, for example BABT8767-59-410W for the CS6R 410W. MCS certification is what makes the installation eligible for the Smart Export Guarantee and for 0% VAT, so check that the reference on your quote matches the exact panel being fitted.
Are Canadian Solar panels made in Canada?
No. The company was founded in Ontario in 2001 and the parent is listed on NASDAQ, but manufacturing sits with CSI Solar Co., Ltd, headquartered in Suzhou, China, with additional capacity in Thailand and the United States. The warranty is issued by the manufacturing entity.
How long do HiKu6 panels last?
The performance warranty runs 25 years and guarantees at least 84.8% of rated output at that point. Panels routinely keep working past their warranty period at gradually reduced output. The 12-year product warranty is the shorter and more relevant number, since it is what covers the panel physically failing.
Can I mix HiKu6 and TOPHiKu6 panels in one array?
Not on the same string. Their voltage and current characteristics differ, so mixing them in series drags the whole string down to the weaker panel. They can run on separate MPPT inputs or on microinverters, but a competent installer will avoid the arrangement unless there is a specific reason for it.
Is the HiKu6 being discontinued?
Canadian Solar has not announced an end date, but PERC production has collapsed industry-wide and the company’s residential focus has shifted to the n-type TOPHiKu6. Treat HiKu6 stock as a run-out line and price it accordingly.
My quote says HiKu6 but the model number ends in T. Which is it?
The model number wins. A “T” suffix, as in CS6R-430MS-T, means the n-type TOPCon module, which is the better panel with the longer warranty. Some UK sellers publish it under a Mono PERC heading. Ask for the datasheet and confirm the warranty terms in writing.
A good panel that has been overtaken by its own replacement
The HiKu6 is durable, cheap and made by a manufacturer with 25 years behind it. Nothing about it is bad. It is simply a 2020 product on a 2026 quote, carrying a 12-year product warranty and a cell technology that has dropped below 5% of world production, while the same company’s TOPHiKu6 fits the identical roof space with 30 more watts and double the product cover.
On a 12-panel array the module upgrade is roughly £100 to £200 on a job costing around £6,150. That buys you about 7% more output in year one and roughly 13% more by year 25, plus 13 extra years of warranty on the panel itself.
Find the part number on your quote. If it reads CS6R with no T on the end, go back to the installer and ask what the TOPCon version costs. If the answer is anything under a couple of hundred pounds, take it.
