The 40-year warranty is why people buy this panel. In 2026, the more useful question is who is left to honour it.

The Maxeon 7 is still the most efficient interdigitated back-contact panel a UK installer can put on your roof, and its warranty is unmatched on paper. It is also no longer SunPower’s flagship here, and the company that wrote that warranty is in judicial management. Both things are true, and the second one should change how you read the first.

If you have a quote in front of you with SunPower Maxeon 7 on it and a price two or three thousand pounds above the next quote down, you are trying to work out whether four decades of guaranteed output is worth the difference. That is the right question. The honest answer has moved considerably in the last twelve months, and almost every review still online was written before it moved.

This review covers what the panel actually is, what it costs on a UK roof, the arithmetic on whether the premium pays back, one wiring constraint that catches installers out, and what the corporate situation means for the warranty you would be buying.

The short version
  1. It is a genuinely excellent panel. Up to 24.1% module efficiency, 0.25% maximum annual degradation, and 40-year product, power and service cover. Nothing mainstream matches that specification.
  2. It is no longer SunPower’s UK flagship. The SunPower UK homeowner catalogue now lists the M Class back-contact range instead, at up to 24.5% and up to 495W.
  3. Maxeon Solar Technologies is under judicial management in Singapore as of April 2026, and its shares were suspended from Nasdaq on 1 May 2026.
  4. Your UK warranty is not held by that company. TCL SunPower Global bought the EMEA business in 2025 and still publishes 40-year cover for Maxeon panels on its UK site.
  5. The premium does not pay back on generation alone. Against a mainstream panel, the measurable energy gain over 25 years is worth roughly £600, against a price gap of £2,000 to £3,000.

Buy it if you are fitting a small or awkward roof, plan to stay put for decades, and you can get it at a sensible price from an installer who will register the warranty. Skip it if you are optimising payback, because on generation alone the premium does not come back. The engineering earns a high score. The commercial position does not.

What changed in 2026, and why it matters more than the specification

You came here for a panel review, so here is the part of the panel review that actually affects your money. A 40-year warranty is a 40-year promise from a legal entity, and the entity has changed twice since the Maxeon 7 launched.

Maxeon Solar Technologies announced in November 2024 that it would focus solely on the United States, and agreed to sell its EMEA, APAC and LATAM sales and marketing organisation to TCL Group. That sale completed in 2025, forming TCL SunPower Global. If you buy SunPower-branded panels in the UK today, your counterparty is a TCL business unit, not Maxeon.

Maxeon itself has since deteriorated badly. The Singapore High Court placed it under interim judicial management on 9 April 2026. Nasdaq notified the company that its securities would be delisted, trading was suspended on 1 May 2026, and the shares moved to the over-the-counter market. A further delisting notice followed on 26 May 2026, citing the absence of any independent directors on the audit committee and a Form 20-F that had not been filed.

Read this before you sign

Several UK panel guides still describe Maxeon as a Nasdaq-listed manufacturer with strong TCL backing, and use that as the reassurance behind the 40-year figure. That description is out of date. Check the date on any page telling you the warranty is underwritten by a healthy listed company.

The genuinely reassuring part is that the UK entity is a different one. TCL SunPower Global’s UK site still publishes 40-year product, power and service cover across its back-contact range and names the Maxeon line explicitly, and the warranty registration portal is still live. TCL is a Fortune Global 500 group with roughly 200 staff and more than ten legal entities across Europe, which is a materially better place for a 40-year obligation to sit than a company in judicial management.

The second change is quieter and easier to miss. The Maxeon 7 is no longer the flagship. SunPower’s UK homeowner product pages now list back-contact as the M Class range, at up to 24.5% efficiency and up to 495W with a 0.26%/°C temperature coefficient and 99% year-one output. The Maxeon 7 no longer has its own product page. It has not been withdrawn, and distributor stock is still being fitted, but you are buying the outgoing model.

What the Maxeon 7 actually is

It is an interdigitated back-contact panel, which means every electrical contact sits on the rear of the cell rather than the front. Conventional panels run thin metal fingers and busbars across the face of each cell, and those lines both shade the silicon and give corrosion and thermal fatigue somewhere to start. Move them to the back and you gain roughly 3 to 5% more active surface, remove the most common failure path, and get a flat, uniform black face with no visible grid lines.

Maxeon has been building this architecture since the 1980s, when Richard Swanson commercialised the design out of Stanford. That is the longest continuous run of back-contact production in the industry, and it is the reason the warranty exists. The company is not being brave with the 40-year figure. It has field data from more than 33 million panels.

Two things follow for a UK roof. The cells sit on a solid copper foundation rather than being interconnected by thin ribbon, so micro-cracking and the output loss that follows are much less likely on a roof that flexes in wind or takes a hail strike. And the electrical architecture keeps cell voltage low under shade, which limits hotspot formation when a chimney or aerial throws a shadow across a corner of the array in the winter months.

Temperature coefficient
Power lost per degree above 25°C. At -0.27%/°C the Maxeon 7 is good, though this matters far less in Britain than in Spain.
Voc
Open-circuit voltage. The number that decides how many panels can go in a string. It matters here more than on most panels, for reasons covered below.
MCS
The UK certification scheme. Your installer must be MCS-registered for you to claim 0% VAT and Smart Export Guarantee payments.

Full specifications

The Maxeon 7 ships in two physically different families, and UK quotes are inconsistent about which one they mean. Check the model code, because the electrical behaviour is not comparable.

Two details worth pulling out of those tables. The 112-cell panel is rated to 2400 Pa wind load against the 120-cell panel’s 4050 Pa, which is the difference between a standard test pass and genuine headroom. On an exposed Scottish or coastal site, ask your installer to show the wind-load calculation rather than assuming it is fine. And both panels carry a Class C fire rating, not Class A, which is normal for the market but worth knowing if you are comparing against a panel that advertises Class A.

A number you will see quoted wrongly

Several sites list the Maxeon 7 at 24.9% efficiency. That figure comes from an NREL-verified research measurement, not from a panel you can buy. The commercial datasheets top out at 24.1% for the 445W and 24.0% for the 475W. If a quote claims 24.9%, the installer is reading a press release.

What it costs in the UK

Expect roughly £0.60 to £0.72 per watt at supply, which puts a 445W panel somewhere between £265 and £320 before your installer touches it. That is against £0.42 to £0.48 per watt for an Aiko back-contact panel and £0.20 to £0.27 per watt for a mainstream TOPCon module from JA Solar, Jinko or Trina.

Installed prices are quoted far less consistently, and it is worth understanding why before you compare two numbers you have found online. UK sources currently range from about £1,250 per kW to figures that would imply well over £500 a panel. The spread is real, not sloppy: some quotes bundle scaffolding, DNO notification and a hybrid inverter, others price the panel line separately, and premium-partner installers who hold SunPower accreditation carry higher overheads than a two-van local firm. Compare total installed system prices for the same kWp, or you are not comparing anything.

What the arithmetic below has to justify

Those bands assume a straightforward pitched tiled roof, single scaffold, string or hybrid inverter, no battery. MCS data puts the all-installer average for a 4 to 10 kW system at roughly £1,690 to £1,785 per kW in mid-2026, in line with our wider UK solar panel cost guide, so a mainstream 4.4 kW install landing near £7,000 is normal. The Maxeon quote sits above that because of the panel and because of who is allowed to fit it. All residential solar installs remain zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027.

Does the premium pay back?

No, not on generation. Here is the working, because this is the calculation the premium tier is usually allowed to skip.

Take a south-facing Midlands roof at about 950 kWh per kWp per year, and a ten-panel array either way. Ten Maxeon 7 panels at 445W is 4.45 kWp, which yields about 4,228 kWh in year one. Ten mainstream panels at 440W is 4.40 kWp, yielding about 4,180 kWh. The difference is 48 kWh a year. At a blended value of around 20p per kWh, mixing self-consumption against Smart Export Guarantee income, the higher efficiency is worth about £10 a year. Over 25 years, £250.

Notice what happened there. Efficiency only pays when it changes the number of panels you fit, not when it makes each panel slightly stronger. Ten panels is ten panels.

Degradation is the better argument. The Maxeon 7 is warranted to lose no more than 0.25% a year from a 98% year-one baseline, so its mean retention across 25 years is about 95%. A TOPCon panel at 0.4% a year averages about 93.2%. That 1.8-point gap, applied to roughly 104,500 kWh of generation over the period, is around 1,900 kWh. At 20p, about £380.

Add them and the measurable energy benefit over 25 years is roughly £630, against a price gap of £2,000 to £3,000. On cash payback, the Maxeon 7 loses, and it loses by a wide margin.

Which does not settle it, because two of its advantages are not energy. The first is that years 26 to 40 are warranted at all, and a panel that fails in year 31 is a free replacement rather than a scaffold hire and a bill. The second is that the panel might let you fit more kilowatts on a roof that cannot take another module of a lower-density type, and that is where the real money is. Below is when that happens.

The wiring constraint nobody mentions

The 112-cell panel has an open-circuit voltage of 83.0 V. That is roughly double a conventional 440W module, which sits nearer 38 to 42 V, and it changes how many panels can go in a string.

Cold weather raises open-circuit voltage. At a UK design minimum of around -10°C, and a voltage temperature coefficient of -0.236%/°C, the Maxeon 7’s Voc rises about 8% to roughly 90 V. Divide that into a 600 V maximum MPPT input, which is what a great many UK residential hybrid inverters offer, and you get six panels per string. Ten panels therefore needs two strings across two trackers, or a 1000 V-rated inverter. A conventional 440W panel at the same design temperature reaches about 41 V, giving fourteen per string on the same inverter.

Ask your installer this

Which Maxeon 7 variant is being quoted, what is the maximum DC input voltage of the proposed inverter, and how many strings and MPPT trackers does the design use? If the answer to the last one is vague, the design has not been done properly. On the 120-cell panel the constraint flips: 12.48 A per string is high, and two parallel strings on one tracker can exceed some MPPT current limits.

This is not a reason to reject the panel. It is a reason to make sure the inverter was chosen after the panel rather than before it, and it is the most common place a premium panel forces a more expensive balance of system. Our guide to the best solar inverters covers the voltage windows to check.

The pattern is that the Maxeon 7 is now the weakest of the three on the terms it used to win on. The M Class beats it on efficiency, power, year-one output and year-40 retention while carrying the same 40-year cover from the same UK entity. Aiko delivers comparable efficiency for roughly two thirds of the price per watt, trading fifteen years of paper warranty for it. If you want the SunPower warranty, ask why you are being quoted the older panel rather than the newer one. Sometimes the answer is that a distributor has stock at a good price, which is a genuinely fine reason. Sometimes it is that the installer has not updated their spec sheet.

Who should buy it

Worth the money if

Your roof is the constraint, not your budget. A small, dormered or hipped roof where you cannot reach your target kWp with a lower-density panel is where the premium tier genuinely earns out, because the alternative is a smaller system forever.

You are not moving. Years 26 to 40 only have value to the person who is still there, and the cover is tied to the installation rather than to you.

Part of the array is shaded. The low shade voltage and hotspot behaviour are a real advantage on a roof with a chimney, a neighbouring gable or an aerial. See how shade affects output.

Appearance matters. On a period property or a conservation-sensitive elevation, the flat black face with no grid lines is noticeably better from the ground.

You have found remaining stock at a discount. Being the outgoing model can work in your favour if the saving is passed on.

Look elsewhere if

You are optimising payback. The arithmetic above is not close. A mainstream TOPCon array pays back years sooner, as our premium versus budget panel comparison sets out.

You have plenty of unshaded roof. Density buys you nothing when you have space to spare. Fit more cheaper panels instead.

You are likely to move within ten years. You will pay for four decades of cover and hand over most of it. Buyers rarely price it in.

The warranty is the entire reason. If that is the draw, the M Class gives you the same 40 years on a newer panel with better numbers.

Your site is exposed. On a coastal or highland roof, check the wind-load figure against the specific variant before committing.

Your position is better than the headlines suggest, and there are three things worth doing this month.

Confirm the warranty is registered

The 40-year term requires registration. Without it you are on 25 years, which is a fifteen-year difference created by a form. Check with your installer, and if they cannot confirm it, register through the SunPower partner portal yourself.

Find out which entity holds your cover

Panels bought in the UK before the TCL handover may reference Maxeon Solar Technologies on the certificate. TCL SunPower Global currently services Maxeon warranties in the UK. Ask them, in writing, to confirm your installation is on their system.

Keep your own evidence

Store the MCS certificate, the commissioning paperwork, the panel serial numbers and a dated photograph of the array. If a claim ever has to be argued through a distributor or an installer rather than the manufacturer, that file is what makes it winnable.

None of this means your panels are at risk. IBC modules from this line have a long field record and the failure modes the warranty covers are rare. It means the paperwork is now doing more work than it used to, and paperwork is cheap to sort out while everyone involved still answers the phone. Maxeon 7, answered
Is the Maxeon 7 still available in the UK?

Yes, through accredited SunPower partners and remaining distributor stock, but it no longer appears in SunPower’s UK homeowner catalogue. The back-contact slot is now filled by the M Class. Expect availability to thin through 2026 and 2027.

Did SunPower go bankrupt?

Two different companies get confused here. SunPower Corporation, the US installation business, filed for Chapter 11 in August 2024 and its brand was bought by Complete Solaria. That is unrelated to UK panels. Separately, Maxeon Solar Technologies, which manufactured the panels and holds the SunPower brand outside the US, entered judicial management in Singapore in April 2026. The UK sales and service business was sold to TCL in 2025 and is not in either process.

Will the 40-year warranty actually be honoured?

TCL SunPower Global publishes it on its UK site today and operates the registration portal, and TCL is a substantial group. Nobody can guarantee a 40-year commercial promise, from any manufacturer. Treat the last fifteen years of any panel warranty as a bonus rather than as value you have paid for, and judge the purchase on the first 25.

How does it compare to Aiko?

Both are back-contact panels with similar efficiency. Aiko costs roughly two thirds as much per watt and offers 25-year product with 30-year performance cover. Maxeon offers 40 years across product, power and service, and a lower degradation cap. Aiko is the better financial decision for most UK homes. Maxeon is the better decision if longevity outranks payback.

Does it qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee?

Yes, provided the installation is carried out by an MCS-certified installer using MCS-listed products. Confirm the specific model code appears in the MCS Product Directory before signing, because certification is granted per variant rather than per range.

Is 24% efficiency worth paying for in the UK?

Only when it changes how many panels fit. Efficiency determines watts per square metre, so it matters when roof area is the binding constraint. If you have space for the array you want, a 22% panel generates the same annual kWh per kilowatt installed as a 24% panel, and costs considerably less. Where this leaves you

The Maxeon 7 is a better-engineered panel than almost anything else on a British roof, and that has not changed. What changed is that its two selling points, the warranty and the efficiency lead, have both weakened. The warranty is now written by a different company from the one that designed the panel. The efficiency lead has been taken by its own replacement and matched, at a much lower price, by Aiko and by the LONGi Hi-MO X10.

There is a version of this purchase that still makes sense: a small or shaded roof, a house you intend to keep, an accredited installer who has designed the strings properly, and a price that reflects the panel’s outgoing status. There is also a version that does not, which is paying a flagship premium for a model that is no longer the flagship.

The bottom line

Buy the warranty, not the wattage

The efficiency difference between a Maxeon 7 and a good mainstream panel is worth about £10 a year on a typical UK roof. The degradation difference is worth about £15. Together that is nowhere near the £2,000 to £3,000 premium, and no amount of specification comparison changes that.

What you are actually buying is a transfer of risk: forty years of cover instead of twenty-five, on a cell architecture with an unusually long field record. That is a real thing to want, and some people should want it. It is just not a savings calculation, and any quote that presents it as one is selling you something.

If the 40-year cover is what you are after, ask your installer to price the SunPower M Class alongside the Maxeon 7. Same warranty, same UK entity, better panel. If the price comes back higher and you cannot see why, that is your answer.
